Sperm Whale Washed Ashore at Dell, North Lewis

Sadly this 40 - 45ft sperm whale was washed ashore at South Dell (probably on Wednesday).

Sperm whales are the largest of the toothed whales. They can reach up to 60ft in length.
They can dive to 3000m
Stay submerged for up to 2 hours
Can live for more than 75 years
Their usual diet is squid, (including giant squid which grow to more than 48ft and which do not give up without a fight), octopus and fish
