Hebrides Birds Sightings of Hebrides birds and where the sightings were made during the last month are noted. bird sightings Birding in the Hebrides has the bonus of an abundance of rarities, many of what are UK rare birds sightings, are frequent in the Hebrides, whilst species common in the rest of Britain become unusual birds in the Hebrides. The Hebrides also have unusual subspecies of species common to the rest of the UK, the Starling and Wren Species for example. Hebrides birds have many choices of wilderness habitat. Areas where some of the more rare birds which often prefer open spaces, away from roads and people, can choose safe nesting areas. The Islands are on a major bird flight path, Spring and Autumn, birds migrate to and fro from Iceland and Greenland, and birds are also windblown from Northern Europe and America. So unusual birds and the regulars appear at any time. Lewis Peatlands Special Protection Area (SPA) is an area protected under European law for a diversity of important and rare birds, including golden eagles, black-throated divers, red-throated divers, greenshanks, merlins, and dunlins. A total of 372 bird species have been recorded in the Outer Hebrides. |
