Loch Sgiopoirt - South Uist - Outer Hebrides (Western Isles)
April 30th 2007
Went for a long walk on the rugged side of South Uist off the beaten track visiting all the old sheilings around Loch Sgiopoirt.
It was beautiful and peaceful around the bays and here is a photo from the pathless side over to Loch Sgiopoirt which I doubt many people have taken in the last 30 years. We went into one old house where there were old bottles of whisky and salt and sauce and an open paper dated 1972. There were no roads to these sheilings just a slightly raised peat track, perhaps in places a horse and cart could have got to. There were about 10 old houses and an old large ruin, with only the outside gate and wall standing. Looked at the old 1930s map when I got home and it was a school. In 1898 map there was nothing out there, so in under a hundred years gone from nothing to small thriving community to nothing but a few sheep and Wheatears amongst the ruins.
The fields and machair are alive with daisies and dandelions they look great!
The Outer Hebrides are a chain of Islands off the North-West coast of Scotland.
