People involved in the Arch Project

The Archway project is about social horticultural goals benefiting the Western Isles community.

At the forefront of the plan is to provide affordable organic produce for members of the community on low income

The Lewis and Harris Horticultural Producers Group

The Arch Project is a branch of the Lewis and Harris Horticultural Producers group which was formed in 1996.

The Lewis and Harris Horticultural Group now have more than 80 members who work co-operatively toward strengthening the position of horticulture in the Islands.

Arch Project Co-Workers

The project needs the help of volunteers for hands-on work. The polytunnels are up and the first season's crops have been harvested. The next phase is to build the wooden soil-filled beds inside the tunnels, and to create lazy beds in the outside cropping area. This is an ideal opportunity to get involved, how much or how little you do is entirely up to you, working in the tunnels is a perfect way to do some gardening getting fresh air and exercise in Winter without a soaking!

Future Horticulturalists in the Western Isles

Part of the future plan of the project which is now in action is the building of a teaching room, to provide accredited horticultural training courses for the community. The building should be completed within 3 weeks with a bit of luck but there will be the decorating inside and wood protection outside to do as well as a few other tweaks, if anyone is interested in volunteering some time to this valuable project could they get in touch.

Another developing plan is to liase with local schools, to go in and do some horticultural training and education with the children. The next generation is very important!
