The Arch Project Aims
The Archway project is about social horticultural goals benefiting the Western Isles community.
Toward this goal the project aims to provide affordable organic produce for members of the Western Isles community on low income. The Western Isles has an oceanic climate, yet amongst local horticulturalists success stories abound, tomatoes, grapes and even peaches have been grown and ripened to juicy sweetness here. We aim to share some of the skills that led to these successes, and the rewards.
The rewards are many and diverse, there are the obvious health reasons in eating fresh organic produce, or the exercise and fitness gained by helping with the cultivation of the crops, but there are also more subtle benefits, the sense of well-being that comes from growing things, physical and mental health benefits.
The project team are looking for volunteers to help with the hands-on work. The polytunnels are up and the first season's crops have been harvested. The next phase is to build the wooden soil-filled beds inside the tunnels, and to create lazy beds in the outside cropping area.
This is an ideal opportunity to get involved, how much or how little you do is entirely up to you, working in the polytunnels is a perfect way to do some gardening in Winter, getting fresh air and exercise, without getting a soaking! Get a sense of purpose instead.
The Project now has a building in the finishing stages of being erected on site comprising of a training room, office, shower and toilets including disabled facilities. if anyone is interested in volunteering some time to this part of the project could they get in touch via email.
Come for a visit and see if you are tempted to join us.
