Arnol Blackhouse Museum

Arnol is a crofting village on the West Side of the Isle of Lewis.

The Blackhouse Museum site in Arnol consists of four buildings, a restored blackhouse and a "white-house" museum building, an interpretation centre and the ruins of a blackhouse which has been excavated.

The interpretation centre has facilities which include video footage taken in the Hebrides in the early 1900's.
Seeing real people going about their daily lives and using items like the ones within the museum helps bring past to present.

The Blackhouse Museum has an authentic feel to it, with a lit peat fire burning in the centre of the floor most days, and everyday obects of the time and place.

The "White-house" museum is set in the 1950's and again has an authentic feel to it

Both the two buildings give an impression of what it was like inside the home (as much as any "unlived in" place can)
it is worth bearing in mind however, that much of life was spent not within walls but on moor, sea and croft.
