Wheatears spend winter south of the Sahara (West Africa). The first migrants will probably leave Africa in January, males setting off a week or two before the females.

 

Wheatear records in the Western Isles

Common migrant breeder (1000 -10,000 pairs)

Oenanthe oenanthe leucorrhoa the Greenland Wheatear, is probably a fairly common passage visitor (occurs in small numbers)
