- UK: AMBER LIST. 1300 pairs in summer. Winter 10,000 birds BTO
- UK: Migrant Breeder, Passage/Winter Visitor
- WI: Uncommon Migrant Breeder (5-10 breeding records) ,Scarce passage visitor (Very small numbers each year)
- Breeds: Europe, Asia, North America,
- Winters: Africa, South Asia, South America
- Surface feeding (dabbling) duck. Huge wide bill. Breeding males: Dark green heads, white breasts, chestnut flanks. Females & non-breeding males are light-brown ducks - but bill gives ID. Female forewing grey.
Flight: Concorde! & shows light blue & green wing patches
- Habitat: Shallow lochs, reservoirs, marsh, reedbeds, wet grassland
- Diet: Omnivorous: Small insects, molluscs, crustaceans, seeds; filters plant matter with bill
- Listen to a Shoveler RSPB site
- Similar birds: Mallard, Shelduck, Garganey,
In winter the UK breeding birds head south, and continental birds from further North replace them
