Bird Sightings
Friday 24th October, 2008
Saw this Buzzard hunting over Callanish at dusk. I think that an accident due to the severe gales is the probably the cause of damage to the wing - missing flight feather/s? It looks dramatic in the centre photo. (There again it could be a moult). It was hard to judge how well the bird was flying as it was so gusty.
It seems a bit co-incidental with the weather and I have only ever seen a partial gap in a wing before.
I asked Martin Scott of Western Isles RSPB what he thought...
"Hard to be certain but I'd suggest that it may have been shot. It is certainly not natural moult, and is 'trauma' induced. I have seen similar injuries on other species ie geese that were shot."
