- Breeds: North-East Europe, North Asia
- Winters: Sub-tropics, South Asia, South China, Northern India
- Habitat: Coniferous forest or woodland, preferably with willow or birch
- Diet: Seeds (breeding season - plus insects)
- Brown back heavily streaked. White below with narrow dark streaks. Chestnut face. White eye-stripe (malar stripe). Black crown stripes. White eye-ring. Cheeks chestnut with narrow dark border at rear. Sexes similar.
